The Red River Gorge in Kentucky (map link) was a surprise to me.  I was expecting something like Watkins Glen, Gorge, in New York State.  But this gorge was more like a meandering valley.  Once again, I arrived for the sunset, but by then the visitor’s center was closed.

I did find my way through Nada Tunnel to an overlook near the “Whistling Arch, ” which was much smaller than I had expected.  Apparently the triangular shaped rock sticking up from the ground makes a whistling sound when the wind is right.

The Nada tunnel was a bit of a scary experience.  It was originally designed for a lumber train, and is 900 feet long, but only 11 feet wide, so it’s only wide enough for one car.  There is no traffic control at either end, so it’s quite possible to start in to the tunnel and encounter another car inside, whereby somebody would have to back all the way out.  Fortunately, that didn’t happen to me.
